NMN vs NAD+: What If You Skipped the Ingredient and Took the Real Thing?
Published October 7, 2026 · 10 min read

NMN is everywhere. On podcasts. On shelves. On your friend's kitchen counter.
Here is what the label does not put in large type. NMN is not the thing your cells use. It is an ingredient. Your body has to turn it into something else first.
That something else is NAD+.
So here is a question.
What if you skipped the ingredient and took the real thing?
NMN vs NAD+: the ingredient and the real thing
NAD+ is a molecule in every cell you have. It takes part in about 500 chemical reactions, among them turning food into energy and repairing DNA. It is the reason this whole field exists.
NMN is one step before it. Your cells take NMN and convert it into NAD+.
Think of flour and bread. Flour matters. But flour is not bread.
What the studies say about NMN
Give the ingredient its due. NMN capsules have real human trials behind them. A 2024 review counted nine.
- It gets in. In the trials that measured it, NMN raised NAD+ in the blood.
- Some results were encouraging. In one trial of 80 adults, people on NMN walked farther in six minutes after 60 days. In another, 25 women with prediabetes showed a better muscle response to insulin after 10 weeks. In a third, older men walked faster after 12 weeks.
- Some were flat. A pooled analysis of eight trials and 342 adults found no meaningful change in blood sugar or cholesterol.
- It was well tolerated. No safety problems were reported at the amounts tested, in trials lasting up to 12 weeks. Nobody has studied it for years.
And it is legal. In September 2025 the FDA said NMN may be sold as a dietary supplement, reversing its earlier position.
So NMN is a fair place to start, and for the price-conscious it is the sensible one. See NMN in our supplements shop.
NAD+ itself has been studied far less in people. The research has not caught up with the demand. We set out what is and is not known in NAD+ Injections and Aging: What If You Never Ran Low?
Capsule or injection: why the route matters
Three things happen to a capsule that do not happen to an injection.
1. It has to get through your gut and your liver. In a tracer study in mice, NMN given by mouth was largely turned into nicotinamide, a plain form of vitamin B3, in the liver. Given straight into the bloodstream, it reached the tissues intact.
What if much of your capsule arrives as vitamin B3?
2. You are trusting a label. Nobody tests a supplement before it goes on sale. In 2024 researchers in Singapore and the Netherlands bought NMN products and measured what was inside. The contents ranged from none at all to 104% of what the label claimed. Three had no detectable NMN.
It is why we tell you exactly what is in ours: 500 mg of NMN in each capsule, one ingredient, nothing else in the bottle.
3. Nobody looks at your history. A capsule is a decision you make alone. A prescription means a licensed physician has reviewed your health history first.
An injection takes none of those roads. It is NAD+ itself, prepared for your prescription by a licensed 503A compounding pharmacy, and it never passes through your gut.
What we think
And we think NMN is the honest choice when price comes first.
Has this been proven? No. Nobody has put NAD+ injections and NMN capsules side by side in a trial, and nobody has shown that either one slows aging in people. This is our view, and we would rather give you our reasons than a slogan.
Safety
NMN was well tolerated in the trials, which lasted up to 12 weeks. Its long-term safety has not been studied. It is a dietary supplement. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
NAD+ by injection is a compounded medication. It is not FDA-approved, and the FDA has not reviewed it for safety or effectiveness. It is prescribed only after a licensed physician reviews your history, and they may decide it is not right for you. The NAD+ article has a fuller section on safety.
With either one, tell your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and list the medications you take.
What each costs at Goprolean
Two prices, for two kinds of buyer.
If price comes first, start with NMN. See NMN in our supplements shop
If you want the real thing, that is the injection. If a physician does not prescribe, you are refunded in full.
So, the ingredient or the real thing?
NMN is where most people start, and at $55 a month it is a fair place to start.
But it is the ingredient. If what you want is NAD+, there is a way to take NAD+.
What if you stopped at the flour, when you could have had the bread?
At Goprolean, NAD+ is a prescription injection given under the skin, $299 for a one-month supply with the telehealth consultation included. NMN is a 500 mg capsule from our supplements shop, $55 for a one-month bottle.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between NMN and NAD+?
NAD+ is the molecule your cells use to turn food into energy and to repair themselves. NMN is the ingredient your body converts into NAD+. NMN comes as a capsule. NAD+ itself is given by injection.
Is NMN the same as NAD+?
No. NMN is one step before NAD+. Your body has to convert it.
Which is better to take, NAD+ or NMN?
We think NAD+ by injection, because it is the molecule itself and it does not pass through the gut. NMN capsules cost far less and have more human studies behind them, so they are a sound choice if price comes first. Nobody has compared the two side by side in a trial.
Does NMN work?
In the human trials that measured it, NMN capsules raised NAD+ in the blood. Some trials also found better walking distance or a better muscle response to insulin, and a pooled analysis of eight trials found no meaningful change in blood sugar or cholesterol. Whether NMN changes how people age has not been shown.
What are the side effects of NMN?
In trials lasting up to 12 weeks, NMN was well tolerated and no safety problems were reported. Its long-term safety has not been studied.
Is NMN legal in the United States?
Yes. In September 2025 the FDA said NMN may be sold as a dietary supplement, reversing its earlier position.
Can you get NMN as an injection?
Some clinics offer one, but the human studies of NMN used capsules. At Goprolean the injection is NAD+ itself, by prescription.
How much do NMN and NAD+ cost?
At Goprolean, NMN is $55 for a one-month bottle from our supplements shop. NAD+ injections are $299 for a one-month supply by prescription, and that price includes the telehealth consultation with a licensed physician.
